PAA continues to work with the Stadium School Youth Dreamers on plans to convert a dilapidated house in the Waverly neighborhood into a youth center for after school activities. Currently in planning is Dreamers Day, where volunteers will clear out debris and construction materials to more clearly identify the existing structure and to plan for a change of use. This group received the zoning variance they had sought from Baltimore City. Youth Dreamers is a group of middle school students and faculty from the Stadium School. Their goal is to decrease the negative influences that youth are exposed to after school by creating a youth center.  For more information about Youth Dreamers, or to donate or volunteer, please visit their website at www.youthdreamers.org.

2005 Festival of the Trees

Penza Associates Architects entry in the 2005 Festival of Trees annual tree auction and competition won First Place Chairman’s Chioce (“The Grinch brings (He)art to Baltimore won the same award last year). The Penza team designed “TREE-VOLTA”, a dashing disco revival complete with an internally lit “light box” dance floor, disco ball ornaments and a life-size dancer, fully-costumed evoking memories of John Travolta himself. A light and sound extravaganza set the mood to the tune of “Night Fever” by the BeeGees. Proceeds from the auction, held annually at the Maryland State Fair Grounds’ Cow Palace in Timonium, benefit the Kennedy Krieger Institute Children’s Hospital.

If you like decorated trees, model trains, gifts, crafts, live music, carousel and Santa, then by all means check out the Festival of Trees next year right around Thanksgiving. Go to these websites for more information on how you can participate.

Laura Penza, as Vice President of the Govanstowne Business Association, has been active in the effort to renovate the Curran Memorial at the corner of York Road and Woodbourne Avenue. The current memorial was constructed years ago in honor of Joseph Curran Sr., and it houses rare carillon bells that have been inactive for many years due to a lightening strike. The bells are scheduled to be restored and relocated to Thanksgiving Place at Stadium Place. Penza Associates Architects is assisting in redesigning the current memorial into a striking clock tower, scheduled for completion during spring of 2006.

This past summer the PAA family (including the kids) participated in the City Sands competition, held annually at Harborplace in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. This year's theme, "Grains of Sucess", correlated with the opening of the new African-American History Museum in Baltimore. Our design, an oyster with a large pearl in the center, symbolized how many African-Americans in Maryland were able to earn a living and their freedom by fishing for oysters in the Chesapeake Bay.

Having successfully navigated the preliminary review process, the condominiums at 612 Washington Boulevard are now entering the Construction Documents phase. Working with the Ridgeley’s Delight community over a period of approximately six months, PAA has garnered their support for the project as well as that of the Planning Department and the Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation (CHAP). The project developer is Snyder Development Company. 612 Washington Boulevard involves the conversion of the former Eklof Company, long known in the Baltimore area as a supplier of commercial kitchen equipment and supplies, to twenty residential condominiums with secure parking and retail space on the ground level. The building itself is a mix of six residential and commercial structures combined to form one building sometime prior to 1896.
